Sunrise over Slovakia

Sunrise over Slovakia

Getting from Krakow to Budapest via Zakopane, Poprad and Kosice.... was exhausting.

After missing my train from Kosice, Slovakia to Budapest I decided to sleep in the train station because the next train left at 6am. It seemed silly to book a hostel/hotel room for only 9 hours.

Sleeping in a rundown/dodgy train station in Slovakia was a little unnerving. Airports just feel safer for some reason. I found a dark out of the way corner of the station. I bolted my bag to the bench, made sure I didn't have anything valuable in my pockets and made a pillow out of a stack of magazines.

I was so glad to finally get onto the train and to the hostel in Budapest. The sunrise was quite lovely and a bit surreal considering how sick and tired I was at the time.

Total trip cost me 9€ thanks to a free ticket from Poprad to Budapest that someone gave me at the Ginger Monkey Hostel.

Haunted Arnos Manor Hotel BS4

Haunted Arnos Manor Hotel BS4

Ghost hunters Bristol 2006 - Ghost hunters in Bristol have declared a 244-year-old hotel in Brislington officially haunted. Guests at Arnos Manor Hotel, in Bath Road, get more than they bargain for when they check in for the night. Ghostly figures can be seen climbing non-existent stairs, baths fill up with steaming hot water, guests are pinned to their beds and toiletries are thrown through the air.

In 2004, one guest was so terrified by a feeling of having his chest crushed that he took his duvet, fled the bedroom and slept in the hotel chapel. Now a team of paranormal investigators have declared the hotel as being officially haunted. They have even presented staff at the hotel with a certificate to prove it.

The team of 15 ghost hunters spent the night at the hotel and recorded a number of mysterious and ghostly-goings on, including temperature drops, ghostly apparitions and people feeling as though they were being pushed in the back. One ghost hunter, Wendy Isaacs, of Yate, said: 'It was one of the most active ghost hunts we have been on.

'We picked up on the presence of a man dressed in tweed in the bar, a strange feeling of sorrow in the chapel and spirits in two of the hotel bedrooms. 'Even the sceptics among us were left scratching their heads.' Hotel sales manager Garry Milward said the hotel, which has 73 bedrooms, has a long history of spooks. He said: 'This is a very old site with quite a history and has had its fair share of ghost sightings.

'Some of our chambermaids wont even go in certain rooms alone. 'The ghost hunters have confirmed what we always believed was true because strange things have been going on here for quite a long time.'

Built as a home in 1760 by local merchant William Reeve, the seventy three bed-roomed Arnos Manor Hotel has a reputation of being haunted. The Arnos Manor has its own Chapel in which Nuns would ran a girls school. One of the reported ghost stories involves a nun who is suspected to have fallen pregnant. She reputedly committed suicide and was bricked up in a wall. Work was carried out on the building during World War II, possibly in response to the bomb damage it suffered during a German air raid. The workmen discovered the skeleton and apparently, just hid it somewhere else. Her ghost is said to haunt Room 160 and her apparition was apparently seen several times in 1977.

Reported phenomena includes the hearing of a woman’s voice, apparitions rising as if climbing stairs which don’t exist, guests being pinned down and feeling pressure on their chests as they lie in bed. There maybe some slight poltergeist activity with reports of baths filling themselves and toiletries being thrown around.

There have been claims that the hotel boasts twenty ghosts.

Buckland Manor Hotel

Buckland Manor Hotel

Buckland Manor is the perfect example of a warm and welcoming English country home.Dating from the 13th century and flush with history, this manor house offers fourteen unique bedrooms with adjoining, stylishly-decorated baths. The interior of the hotel is brightly coloured, thanks to painted wall-paper and wall-hangings making all the rooms quite unique. You should try to book the Vaulted Room or the Oak Room, which are particularly large, elegant and beautifully furnished. The atmosphere here is warm and gracious and the hotel is lent further charm by the paintings, works of art and furniture by local craftsmen and artists. Its hard to think of a better way to spend an afternoon than by taking tea (including home-made cakes) by the fire. And perhaps the only way to follow that could be dinner in the restaurant overlooking the rolling hills and valleys of the Costwolds. The cuisine uses local produce and is remarkably original. Who could resist this self-confident dish: Sauted filet of Angus Beef, coated with a Foie Gras Hollandaise, on a bed of truffled lentils and asparagus with a red wine and shallot sauce. Phew!

Dawn - Quebec City wharf

Dawn - Quebec City wharf

This was a trip where dawn was the only time when photos were worth taking. A hurricane followed us up from Philadelphia, after a five-hour delay of sitting on the runway in a cramped puddle jumper of a commuter plane. As we drove from the airport into town, it was sunny, but it disappeared as we pulled up to the hotel, and it was cloudy for the rest of the trip, except for a few breaks toward the end. Still, the city occupies a dramatic post along the cliffside, where it once guarded the valuable St. Lawrence Seaway. Now it beckons cruise ships, whose passengers unfortunately have spawned a proliferation of tacky t-shirt shops in the town proper. Stick to the lower levels and their restaurants, along with the spectacular island across the river. Shots of the island are in my Quebec folder to the right.

Whitby rooftops

Whitby rooftops

Whitby, England is a small fishing village that lies along the edge of the North York Moors at the mouth of the River Esk. The river splits the town into east and west as it slides into the North Sea. Both halves of the fishing port perch atop sheer cliffs overlooking the harbor and the sea beyond; pleasant jumbles of small red-roofed houses line either side of the river, like carelessly tossed dice.
It is an ancient village first settled in the 5th or 6th century AD. In 637 AD a Catholic abbey was built nearby that pulled Whitby into history when, in 664 AD, the abbey was the chosen location for the Synod – council – of the Celtic and Roman Catholic Churches to come to an agreement on the celebration date for Easter. In 1077, the abbey was rebuilt in the foreboding gothic style of the medieval time. Now, the abbey ruins brood on the outskirts of Whitby. The commanding presence of towering stone facades pierced with sightless arches can cast the eerie shadow of folklore on even the most unimaginative mind.

It was into this harbor of history and myth that Bram Stoker sailed in 1890. He had been working on a novel inspired by Hungarian adventurer Arminius Vambery who had regaled Stoker with eastern European tales of the blood-hungry living dead. Whitby proved to be the perfect setting for Stoker to derive some of the more intriguing details for his book. He was so impressed by the surrealistic, menacing aspects of the immense stone abbey and St Mary’s Cathedral looming over the small town, that he used Whitby in his novel Dracula as the place where the seductive Count meets and kills Lucy.
While in Whitby, Stoker stayed at a small inn on the river. Every evening at dusk the local pigeons would sit on the window ledge and tap mindlessly at their reflections in the glass. Stoker incorporated this sound into his novel as Dracula tapping with long, sharp nails on Lucy’s window, demanding entrance. The bats residing in the stable behind the inn lent another aspect to Stoker’s main character: his ability to shape-shift into not only bats, but also black dogs and mist.

The Mermaid Inn ... Rye, Sussex

The Mermaid Inn ... Rye, Sussex

Rye is a small town in East Sussex, England, which stands approximately two miles from the open sea and is at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. In medieval times, however, as an important member of the Cinque Ports confederation, it was at the head of an embayment of the English Channel and almost entirely surrounded by the sea.

Rye is officially a civil parish but with its historic roots has the status of a town; at the 2001 census it had a population of 4009. During its history its association with the sea has included providing ships for the service of the King in time of war, and being involved with smuggling gangs of the 18th and 19th centuries such as the notorious Hawkhurst Gang who used its inns such as The Mermaid Inn and The Olde Bell Inn, connected by secret passage way.

Those historic roots and its charm make it a tourist destination, and much of its economy is based on that: there are a number of hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, tea rooms and restaurants, as well as other attractions, catering for the visitor. There is a small fishing fleet, and Rye Harbour has facilities for yachts and other vessels.

3D- Stoneleigh Hotel

3D- Stoneleigh Hotel

This is the famous Stoneleigh Hotel from the 1930's, I believe. It just reopened, after having been closed for remodeling for a year. We stayed there on our wedding night, as did many of our out-of-town guess. The crane at the top is busy constructing the Stoneleigh Residence, a brand spanking new condo tower, many of which are now dotting the skyline of Dallas. In fact, the condo building boom has reinvented Downtown Dallas, which is becoming more user friendly with many more attractions than ever.

Again, the beautiful sky is way above the building in 3D.
